To start off each of our podcasts, both Greg and I will be choosing a beer and talking a little about it. Accompanying each podcast, I will be posting a Da Beers blog which summarizes our thoughts on each of the beers as well as some other facts about the breweries that make them.
Voodoo Ranger IPA
Greg's choice of beer for this podcast is made by New Belgium Brewing Company based out of Fort Collins Colorado. Started in 1988, New Belgium has grown from a small basement brewery to the fourth largest craft brewer in the United States.
Voodoo Ranger is one of New Belgium's brands that you can find year-round throughout the country. Coming in at 7% ABV and 50 IBUs, this beer is a great example of what an IPA should be. Per the New Belgium website, Voodoo Ranger IPA "is perfectly bitter with a refreshing, sublime finish".
In the process of researching this beer, I was happily surprised with how much information the New Belgium website has on each of the beers they produce. They even let you know which kind of hops and malt they use in their products. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.

California Amber (ESB-Inspired Ale)
My beer comes from Ballast Point Brewing Company whose main facility is in Miramar California. Founded in 1996 by some college friends who had dreams of turning their home brewing hobby into a full time job, Ballast Point Brewing Company has grown into one of the most award winning breweries of all time. California Amber is one of those award winning beers netting a total of 34 awards so far.
Although it has a rating of 51 IBUs, the complexity of the four different types of malt used is not lost to bitterness. Rather, this beer compliments both the malt and hop notes. Ballast Point's website calls it "a rich copper ale with a case full of gold medals".
Ballast Point Brewing Company points out on their website that if they aren't brewing beer they would rather be fishing. The artwork on all of their beers reflects this second hobby, and I can honestly say that the flavor profile of this beer in particular would pair perfectly with a day out on the boat. You can bet this will be in my ice chest once the weather gets warmer.
I would suggest that everyone should try these two beers especially if you are looking to add something new and exciting to your refrigerator. Make sure you check out the rest our blog posts if you enjoyed this one and I will be back with a summary of the next podcasts beers once we have it posted. If you have any suggestions on what beers we should try next, let us know in the comments below this blog.
Cheers!
-Brian
