Season 2 of the Broken Speaker Podcast has officially begun. In this weeks show Brian and Greg covered the pilot episode of Breaking Bad, gave their impressions, and discussed whether or not they would continue watching.
Missed the podcast? Give it a listen before we go through and do a quick follow-up.
The pilot episode for Breaking Bad has generally received high praise online and throughout the industry. Bryan Cranston was able to win an Emmy specifically for the pilot episode, alongside further nominations and accolades for directing and writing. The awards definitely matched the reviews at the time, with news outlets claiming it was "riveting and remarkable" (USA Today), as well as "unpredictable and stimulating" (Philadelphia Inquirer). All of this praise had to have come from somewhere, right?
Let's get into some follow-up. Here's what Greg has to say about the series:
"First off, I want to say that I may have given Breaking Bad too high of a rating. In the podcast I gave it a 7/10 for good acting and having been introduced to some solid story lines that were relatively interesting. At the end of the day, though, I never watched the second episode. And I have no desire to continue watching any of the shows in this series.
The pilot episode was far too varied in the subject matter for my tastes. There were several exciting plot-lines that held some interest, but ultimately I couldn't care less for the entire middle of the episode. There was too much drama, and I think the writers managed to lay it on incredibly thick for this first episode. As a result, we never get the chance to see Walter White before the existential crisis because he is constantly in an existential crisis, and that kind of makes it boring. This is just my opinion though, I would say that the pilot episode released in a climate much more receptive to the subject matter which may have helped the favorable ratings and good reviews."
So there you have it. The Breaking Bad pilot episode was a bit of a dud eleven years later. Doesn't get more official than that!
