Sad news from Netflix this week, it has been announced via twitter that the popular streaming platform will no longer have the rights to The Office come January 2021. Let's pour one out for those faithful binge-watchers who have the show constantly running on repeat (you know who you are).
We're sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform — but members can binge watch the show to their hearts' content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021— Netflix US (@netflix) June 25, 2019
Fear not, though! The show is not disappearing, just moving platforms. In a decision - probably financially driven - made by NBC, the office will be moved to NBC's own personal streaming platform. The decision makes sense, given the cult following that the show has amassed. Popular social apps like Reddit are constantly flooded with memes relating to or including scenes from The Office, and the show has a special place in the hearts of many despite ending in 2013.
This move highlights the coming corporate battle to move content between streaming services, as everyone vies for a piece of the content pie. Netflix has been positioning themselves over the last few years to be a content producer more than a content platform, opting to produce hundreds of Netflix Originals in a wide variety of formats. The goal being a vast amount of shows to drive consumers towards their platform instead of others. Some of the shows have been smash hits - such as Stranger Things (new season launching July 2019), but it's no secret that Netflix relies on contracts with other studios to keep people interested in their platform.
Other recent hits to the Netflix repertoire includes all Disney content. The Walt Disney Company is planning to launch a new streaming service in November of 2019 to include all of their original film and television content as a direct competitor to Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Currently Netflix has some limited access to titles from Disney, but expect those to disappear around November (or whenever the contracts expire).
If you haven't seen the office, and currently have a Netflix subscription, then you have a couple of years to binge through all nine seasons. If you're still itching for more content around The Office after that, stay tuned to the Broken Speaker Podcast. Our next episode is a pilot-show-face-off between the US and UK versions. It's gonna be patriotic, and we can't be held liable for any international conflicts that it spawns.
